boAt Nirvana Ion TWS
About the Brand
boAt was founded in 2016 by Aman Gupta and Sameer Mehta. The founders wanted to be more approachable and create a lifestyle brand instead of an audio brand that would cater to millennials. boAt focuses on audio products like earbuds, headphones, earphones, and wireless speakers.
Aman Gupta is the current Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) with some background working in JBL for offline distribution and product management. His experiences have been helpful while building boAt and leading it to success.
The company has only focused on digital channels and clearly knows its target audience.
Here are some quick facts about boAt
- boAt has a 32.1% market share in the earwear category reported in Q3 2022.
- boAt has a 41.7% market share in true wireless earphones (TWS)
- They sell over 6,000 units every day.
Who is This Product for?
The boAt Nirvana Ion are for everyone looking for a good battery backup and doesn’t want to worry about constantly charging. With these, charging won’t ever be an issue as these earbuds will easily last you a week with casual usage.
They also come with a Dual EQ mode, and bass lovers will love boAt signature sound mode. It comes with bass-heavy sounds. If you don’t like bass, you can listen on boAt balanced sound mode, and you’ll still have a great experience.
Important Factors we Tested These Earbuds On
We were excited to start testing these headphones because of the exciting features boAt had promised.
1. Design
The boAt Nirvana Ion have a premium-looking case. It has a matte finish with a metallic band running across the middle and features the brand name in the center. The matte finish helps avoid any scratches or fingerprints.
The earbuds have a slightly thicker stem than usual, probably to accommodate the bigger battery. Still, it’s not something that would bother you.
The stem also has a wave design and texture going across it. This looks cool and also provides extra grip. They also have left and right markings.
These earbuds are available in a black and white variant.
2. Durability
The case and the earbuds are made entirely of plastic, but they still feel premium. The matte finish on the case adds to that. The magnet used on the lid case is also of good quality.
The buds also are of excellent quality. They come with an IPX4 rating, so you can easily use them for your workouts without worrying. You can also take these outdoors.
3. Battery Backup
boAt Nirvana Ion come with a 600 mAh battery on the case and a 70 mAh battery on each of the buds. On their own, the buds have a battery life of 24 hours. With the case, they will give a playback of 120 hours.
However, the catch is that this battery life only applies if you listen at 60% volume. The battery life is still good if you listen at a slightly higher volume.
These are easily the only TWS under Rs 2000 to offer a battery backup this powerful.
We tested them for 2 days, and they still had most of their battery life left. We can easily see these lasting for the entire week, so the battery claim that boAt has made is valid.
The case took about 2.5 hours to fully charge, which is decent.
4. Functions and Connectivity
boAt Nirvana Ion come with Bluetooth 5.2, which is slightly outdated now, but we noticed no such issues while connecting.
They come with Insta Wake N’ Pair or IWP Technology, meaning the earbuds will power on and enter into connection mode when you open their case lid. The connectivity speed is super fast, and they get paired instantly.
However, they do not support Dual Device Pairing, so you’ll have to disconnect them to connect with another device.
Touch Controls
They have a range of touch controls for different functions. You can long press to change to a different sound mode from the left earbud – for signature or balanced sound.
Long pressing on the right earbud will activate Beast mode, which features 60ms Low Latency for gaming.
A single tap on any earbud will pause your music and tap again to play. With incoming calls, single tap to receive and double tap to reject.
The volume can be increased or decreased by 25% by triple tapping.
These earbuds use infrared sensors for in-ear detection, and playback will pause as soon as you take your earbuds out.
5. Sound Quality
boAt Nirvana Ion come with 10 mm audio divers and Dual Equalizers, which means you can switch between two different sound modes.
The first is boAt balanced mode which offers a balanced sound with crystal clear audio and is excellent for watching everyday videos.
The second is the boAt signature mode which gives a bass-heavy sound. This is perfect for listening to music and is something bass lovers will enjoy. The bass, however, overpowers mids and highs, so it is something to keep in mind.
There needs to be app support for equalizing sound, which is disappointing as it is present with oppo and realme buds.
Gaming Experience
They also have a gaming mode that supports 60ms low latency. We tested out this mode and faced no latency issues. You’ll have no problem hearing everything going on in the game.
Calling Experience
For Calling, they’ve used ENx Technology which eliminates environmental noises, so your voice is clear.
They also feature quad microphones with two microphones on each bud which results in good clarity. These are good earbuds if you need them for calling or attending meetings.
6. Comfort
When it comes to weight, these earbuds only weigh 5gm each despite the added battery, so they are lightweight, and you won’t feel anything when wearing them. You can easily wear these for workouts.
Secondly, these come with added ear tips in the box in different sizes, so if you feel they don’t fit perfectly out of the box, you can change them according to your preference.
They weigh around 56 gm with the case, so they are easy to carry around and take with you.
What Sets boAt Nirvana Ion Apart From Competitors?
The battery life is a huge plus when it comes to these earbuds and is an upper hand they have when compared to competitors. Most of their competitors don’t even come close to offering the playback time that boAt Nirvana Ion offers.
They also have different modes and features that are a definite plus for this price point.
Should You Purchase boAt Nirvana Ion?
If battery backup is high up your preference list and you hate constantly charging your earbuds, then you should consider these. If you are a casual user, they might even last you an entire week on a single charge.
They have different modes for gaming and listening to music, so they have different options to choose from. You’ll find something for yourself, no matter your preference.
